BRIEF NOTE
ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT
There are 13 villages in U.T. Chandigarh,
which are located within a radius of 8 K.M. from Chandigarh city and have a
population of 50,135. 3 tier Panchayati Raj System exists i.e. one Zila
Parishad at District level, one Panchayat Samiti at Block level and 12 Gram
Panchayats at village level. With the efforts put in by the Chandigarh
Administration, the basic amenities and services are available in abundance to
residents of villages.
During the last year 2007-08, an amount of Rs.346.57
lacs was available under Plan Scheme “Strengthening of Infrastructure”, which
was provided to Panchayati Raj Institutions and the Engineering Department for
the work of street paving, construction of surface drains and storm water
drainage. The sanitation scheme is being also implemented with the funds of
the said Plan Scheme. An amount of Rs.50.00 lacs has been provided to the
Department of Science & Technology for providing solar street lighting in all
villages. The major achievement in the field of rural development are
indicated in the Annexure.
During the current year 2008-09, an amount of
Rs.500.00 lacs was available under the scheme “Strengthening of
Infrastructure” and has been provided to the Zila Parishad for execution of
the development projects in U.T. villages. Further, the following initiatives
are being taken up for social and economic upliftment of the rural masses:-
- Introduction of Paying
Guest Houses.
- Training and
Entrepreneurship development among village youth.
- Development Plan for
Sanitation and shifting of cattle for away from village abadi.
- Survey of Below Poverty
Line Families.
- Preparation of Property
